CITY OF CANTON, SOUTH DAKOTA
Outdoor Aquatic Facility
Burbach Aquatics provided engineering design and construction administration services for the development of a new outdoor aquatic facility for the City of Canton. The project replaced the community's aging pool with a modern, accessible facility designed to meet current recreational needs while providing long-term durability and operational efficiency.

The project began with a geotechnical evaluation that identified challenging subsurface conditions, including an unstable clay layer beneath the proposed pool site. To ensure long-term structural performance and maintain critical construction tolerances, specialized foundation solutions were incorporated into the design, providing a stable base for the new aquatic facility.
​
In addition to the new pool construction, the project included several supporting facilities and site improvements designed to enhance safety, accessibility, and long-term functionality. A new FEMA-compliant bathhouse doubles as a community storm shelter, providing an important public safety resource beyond the aquatic season. The project also included a new mechanical building to house the pool's advanced filtration and circulation systems, along with site grading improvements, ADA-accessible pathways, and enhanced circulation throughout the facility. These improvements ensure a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment for visitors of all ages and abilities.

The completed facility provides the Canton community with a modern aquatic destination that promotes recreation, water safety, and community engagement. Designed for long-term sustainability and ease of operation, the new pool serves as a valuable community asset that will support residents and visitors for generations to come.

CITY OF PIERRE, SOUTH DAKOTA
Outdoor Aquatic Facility
Burbach Aquatics served as the lead engineering and aquatic design consultant for the City of Pierre's new outdoor aquatic center, replacing a 90-year-old municipal pool with a modern destination facility along the Missouri River.

Located in South Dakota's capital city, the project transformed an aging aquatic facility into a state-of-the-art regional attraction designed to serve residents and visitors for generations to come. The site presented several unique challenges, including floodplain requirements, soft soil conditions, large subsurface boulders, and variable bedrock depths. Through innovative engineering solutions and close collaboration among the design team, contractors, and project stakeholders, these challenges were successfully addressed to create a durable, long-lasting facility.

The completed aquatic center features a zero-depth entry recreation pool, 50-meter competition pool, lazy river, water slides, diving boards, interactive water play features, expansive shade structures, turf sunning areas, concessions, and a fully ADA-accessible bathhouse. The facility provides recreational, competitive, and family-oriented aquatic opportunities for users of all ages and abilities.

Funding for the project was secured through a combination of municipal bonds, grants, foundation support, capital campaign efforts, and local community contributions, demonstrating strong public and private investment in the future of aquatic recreation in Pierre.

Today, the Pierre Outdoor Aquatic Center serves as a premier community asset, enhancing quality of life, promoting water safety, supporting competitive swimming programs, and creating a vibrant gathering place for the region.

CITY OF COZAD, NEBRASKA
Outdoor Pool Renovation
Burbach Aquatics partnered with the City of Cozad to revitalize its municipal swimming pool facility through a comprehensive renovation focused on extending the life of the existing aquatic infrastructure while improving accessibility, functionality, and operational efficiency.

The project began with a detailed evaluation of the facility's existing conditions to identify critical maintenance needs and long-term improvements. The primary goal was to restore the pool's structural integrity and water containment performance while modernizing key systems to better serve the community.
​
Renovations included replacement of the perimeter gutter system, upgrades to pool filtration and process water equipment, and refinishing of the existing 50-meter outdoor pool vessel. These improvements enhanced facility performance, reduced maintenance demands, and helped ensure reliable operation for years to come.
​
A significant component of the project involved replacing the existing wading pool with a new, ADA-accessible vessel designed to better accommodate young swimmers and their families. The new wading pool also operates independently from the main pool circulation system, improving water quality management and overall operational efficiency.

Through strategic reinvestment in existing infrastructure, the City of Cozad successfully modernized its aquatic facility while preserving a valued community asset. The renovated pool continues to provide safe, accessible, and enjoyable aquatic recreation opportunities for residents of all ages.

2020 Featured Project
WARREN COUNTY YMCA
Pattee Pool
The YMCA of Warren County's Pattee Pool project transformed the community's aquatic offerings with the construction of a modern, family-oriented aquatic facility designed to serve users of all ages and abilities.
​
The new facility features an 8,658-square-foot pool vessel incorporating a zero-depth entry area, interactive spray features, a toddler slide, an enclosed flume slide, six competition lap lanes, and both 1-meter and 3-meter diving boards. Additional project components included the construction of a new ADA-compliant bathhouse complete with concessions to enhance the overall guest experience.

Completed in June 2020, the project was successfully delivered through a collaborative effort between the YMCA of Warren County, the local project committee, and Burbach Aquatics, Inc. (BAI), resulting in a destination aquatic facility that serves the community for recreation, fitness, and aquatic programming.

CITY OF SUNDANCE, WYOMING
Outdoor Pool Renovation
Burbach Aquatics partnered with the Town of Sundance to revitalize its municipal swimming pool through a comprehensive renovation designed to extend the life of the existing facility while improving safety, accessibility, functionality, and operational efficiency.

The project began with an evaluation of the facility’s existing conditions to identify priority maintenance needs and opportunities for long-term improvements. The renovation focused on addressing aging infrastructure, improving water containment and circulation systems, and enhancing the overall pool environment for the community.
​
Improvements included partial pool deck replacement, repairs to the pool piping system, potable water plumbing, electrical bonding, new deck equipment, site grading and restoration, erosion control, security and chain-link fencing, and a new Manhole #1 with a duplex pumping system. A new water slide was also installed to enhance the recreational experience.
​
Through strategic investment in its existing infrastructure, the Town of Sundance was able to modernize its aquatic facility while preserving a valued community asset. The renovated pool provides a safer, more functional, and enjoyable environment for residents and visitors of all ages while extending the facility’s useful life for years to come.

CITY OF WOOD RIVER, NEBRASKA
Wood River Municipal Swimming Pool
The residents of Wood River, Nebraska came together from all directions to turn their vision of a new municipal swimming pool into reality. Despite a population of just 1,325 residents, the community successfully developed an aquatic facility offering amenities typically found in communities many times its size.

Working alongside Burbach Aquatics, Inc. (BAI), the City successfully passed two separate referendums—a property tax referendum and a local sales tax referendum—to provide a portion of the project funding. The local Pool Committee also led an extensive capital campaign that raised more than $1.70 million in private contributions, demonstrating the community's strong commitment to the project.

The resulting aquatic facility features a zero-depth entry recreation pool with five competition lap lanes, a water slide, diving boards, a lazy river with a vortex whirlpool, water walk features, and a separate spray pad with interactive play elements. Supporting amenities include an ADA-accessible bathhouse with concessions area, a mechanical building, and multiple shade structures, creating a destination aquatic facility that serves residents of Wood River and the surrounding region.

CITY OF HARTFORD, WISCONSIN
Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center
The City of Hartford developed the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center to replace an aging facility and transform the community’s outdoor pool into a vibrant, multi-generational destination for recreation, fitness, and family fun.

The project features a multi-purpose leisure pool with a zero-depth entry, providing accessible access and interactive play opportunities for users of all ages and abilities. A separate 50-meter lap pool supports competitive swimming, recreational use, swim lessons, and fitness programming.
​
Key attractions include two waterslides, a large lazy river, a water walk feature, and a tot slide designed specifically for younger children, creating a diverse aquatic experience that appeals to a broad range of visitors. Shaded seating areas and a concession space enhance guest comfort and encourage longer visits throughout the season.
​
The facility also includes a fully ADA-compliant bathhouse and a dedicated mechanical building designed to support efficient operations and long-term sustainability.
​
One of the most notable successes of the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center is its financial performance. Through strategic programming, strong community engagement, and effective concession operations, the facility consistently operates at a profit. While profitability is uncommon among municipal aquatic facilities, Hartford demonstrates that with thoughtful planning, programming, and management, it is achievable.
